Cooperating with academics from and outside of Hong Kong, Hong Kong English Institute aims to establish Hong Kong-English as a product of Hong Kong’s history. Instead of approaching Hong Kong-English as an incorrect version of English, it should be treated as a dialect, like Cantonese. Just as Cantonese is codified, a Hong Kong-English database should be produced and published. Some Hong Kong-English terms have already been accepted into the Oxford English Dictionary: “long time no see” or “add oil.” The project’s purpose is to create a cultural affinity with Hong Kong-English, and remove the prejudice assigned. .
